“A lady rang the cellar door recently,” recalled Mark Lane, winemaker at Balgownie. ‘I’ve got some old wine’, she said. Her husband, before he passed away, had told her about some boxes of Balgownie wines secretly stashed in the cellar. And sure enough, right down the back, there were two cases – ‘79 Hermitage and ‘80 Cabernet – still stapled shut, with the tissue wrap on the bottles.
